St Mary's and St Peter's School Church of England Primary School

Our school is a voluntary-aided Church of England School, sponsored equally by the two Teddington parishes; St Mary's with St Alban's and St Peter & Paul.


St Mary's and St Peter's is one of the oldest schools in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, founded in 1832. Originally it occupied Victorian premises on the site of the current SS Peter and Paul church, and was erected using voluntary contributions and with the patronage of Queen Adelaide, who made a personal donation of £100. It was rebuilt on the present site in Somerset Road in 1975 and celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2007.

The Governors

The Governors of St Mary’s & St Peter’s school are responsible for the strategic direction of our school and are very involved in the whole of school life. They meet as a group twice a term as well as for regular sub-committees. The Chair of Governors, Revd. Mary Hawes, can be contacted via the school.

St Mary with St Alban has several Foundation Governors who sit on the governing body, including Revd. Joe Moffatt.

Our School’s Admissions 2018/19

It’s an important part of our mission as a church school to serve the local community. In recent years, we have allocated just over half the available places to siblings, with the remaining allocation prioritising church places over distance. Over time the number of church-allocated places has grown, and so the number of distance places reduced. The governors felt this situation needed to be addressed and the revised policy seeks to ensure a fairer balance.

Key changes for the admissions policy for new entrants to the school from September 2017 include:

  • Foundation and Open Places: Once the special circumstances and sibling categories have been allocated, remaining places will be divided between Foundation Places (church places) and Open Places (solely measured by distance). Up to 60% will be Foundation Places and the remainder will be Open Places. If Foundation places are oversubscribed, geographical proximity will be used to give preference.
  • Church attendance: The governors have increased the requirement for parents/ carers to attend church for two years prior to application from once to twice a month. Clergy will, as previously, be asked to certify that applications for a Foundation Place meet this criterion.
  • St Michael and St George Church: The recently reopened St Michael and St George is part of the sponsoring parish of St Peter and St Paul, so attendance there also counts towards the application for a Foundation Place.

Guidance Notes from Rev Joe Moffatt on Applications to St Mary’s & St Peter’s Primary School for Admission from September 2017

Please be aware that the Admissions Policy for St Mary’s & St Peter’s School has recently changed. This came into effect for those applying for entry in September 2017 and continues for those applying for entry in September 2018.

Church places are being limited to 60% of available places after siblings; and the Sunday attendance requirement for church places has increased from once a month to twice a month (for two years).

To apply for a church place, you need to fill in a Supplementary Application Form (available from the school website here) in which you’re asked to declare that you have met this attendance requirement.  This then must be signed by me as your Vicar.

I would be grateful if you could deliver your form to me via the Parish Office (the mailbox is to the left of the main doors of St Mary’s Parish Hall). It will then be ready for collection from the Parish Office two weeks after delivery. Or it can be returned by post if you include a stamped addressed envelope.

The deadline for delivering your form to me is the end of December 2017.

Please also include a family photo to help me put names and faces together – a simple home print-out is fine.
